Early Life and Background
Jude Abaga, professionally known as M.I Abaga, was born on October 4, 1981, in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria. Originally from Taraba State, M.I grew up in a musically inclined family where his mother was a gospel singer. This early exposure nurtured his passion for music and poetry.
M.I attended Baptist High School, Jos, before moving to the United States to study Business and Economics at Calvin College, Michigan. During his time abroad, he was heavily influenced by hip-hop icons like Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill, and DMX, which inspired his rap career.
Musical Journey and Breakthrough
Upon returning to Nigeria in 2003, M.I began performing at local venues in Jos. His big break came in 2006 with the release of “Crowd Mentality”, a track that quickly gained popularity in Northern Nigeria.
In 2008, he dropped his debut album “Talk About It”, which was a massive success and positioned him as one of Nigeria’s most talented rappers. The album featured hits like Safe (featuring Djinee) and Anoti, blending witty punchlines with socially conscious messages.
