Early Life & Education

Akanbi Bamidele Brett—popularly known as Cheque or Superboy Cheque—was born on March 23, 1995, in Okitipupa, Ondo State, Nigeria. He grew up in Ondo Town and pursued his primary and secondary education locally before being admitted to Obafemi Awolowo University, where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering, graduating around 2016–2017.

Musical Genesis at University

Cheque’s musical journey began in 2015 during his time as a university student, performing under the stage name Kyle-B. That year, he released his debut EP, S.O.O.N, featuring collaborations with emerging artists like Fireboy DML, Chinko Ekun, and Zamorra. 


Signing with Penthauze & Early Releases

Phyno discovered Cheque through one of his Instagram freestyle videos and signed him to Penthauze Music in February 2019. Cheque’s first appearance under the label was on the collaborative track “Nyem Space.” 

In 2020, he released his Razor EP, his breakout project, anchored by the smash single “Zoom”—a song that earned a remix featuring Davido and Wale. 


Rise to Prominence

Cheque solidified his place in Afrobeats and hip-hop with follow-up hits like “History” featuring Fireboy DML, and "LOML" featuring Olamide. His debut studio album, Bravo, dropped in September 2021, delivering a blend of introspective lyricism and Afrofusion melodies. 

In 2021, he and Fireboy DML captured the Best Duo in African Hip-Hop award at the All Africa Music Awards—testament to his growing influence. 


Musical Style & Artistry

Cheque is celebrated for his genre-fluid approach, melding Afrobeat, hip-hop, trap, emo-rap, R&B, and pop into a seamless fusion. This versatility has become his signature, allowing him to stand out amid a crowded scene.
