| CKay biography and Career in Music |
Early Life and Background
Chukwuka Ekweani, professionally known as CKay, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer born on July 16, 1995, in Kaduna State, Nigeria. He grew up in a music-loving family where his father, a choir conductor, introduced him to instruments like the guitar. This early influence shaped CKay’s sound, blending Afrobeat, R&B, and Afro-fusion into a unique style.
CKay later moved to Lagos to pursue music professionally, working behind the scenes as a producer before stepping into the spotlight as a recording artist.
Early Career and Breakthrough
CKay signed with Chocolate City Music in 2015, one of Nigeria’s biggest record labels, where he started as a producer. In 2017, he released his debut EP “Who the Fuck Is CKay?”, which introduced him to the Nigerian music scene.
However, his breakthrough came in 2019 with the release of “Love Nwantiti”. The song initially gained moderate success in Nigeria but later went viral internationally, especially after remixes featuring artists from North Africa, Europe, and Latin America.
Global Recognition
In 2021, Love Nwantiti became a global TikTok sensation, topping charts in the US Billboard Afrobeats Chart, UK Singles Chart, and reaching Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. The song earned multi-platinum certifications in several countries, making CKay the first African artist to reach 20 million Spotify monthly listeners.
He followed this success with hit singles like “Emiliana” and “Felony,” further cementing his place as one of Nigeria’s leading Afro-fusion artists.
