Early on 7 December 2025, a group of soldiers burst onto Bénin TV (the national broadcaster) claiming they had seized power in the country. 

In a dramatic televised statement, the soldiers declared the constitution suspended, all institutions dissolved, political party activities banned — essentially announcing a full takeover. 

They said their action was meant to usher in a “new era of fraternity, justice and work” under a new military leadership.

Gunfire reportedly rang out in several areas of Cotonou, including near the residence of Patrice Talon. 

Within hours, the government — with support from forces loyal to the constitution — re-established control. Security forces surrounded the TV station and key state installations.

Reports indicate that at least 14 individuals were arrested in connection with the coup bid.
